Dry ridge vs mortar: which is better for North East roofs?

Dry ridge systems vs traditional mortar-bedded ridge tiles — how they compare on durability, maintenance and storm resistance for Sunderland and North East homes.

22 June 2026 Sunderland Roofer team

For North East roofs, a dry ridge system generally outperforms traditional mortar. Mortar cracks and washes out in our freeze-thaw winters and coastal winds, while dry ridge fixes each tile mechanically so it won’t blow off or need repointing — it’s virtually maintenance-free and meets the current British Standard.

Key takeaways

  • Mortar is cheaper upfront but cracks and needs repointing over time.
  • Dry ridge mechanically fixes each tile — no mortar to fail.
  • Dry ridge resists coastal wind uplift and freeze-thaw far better.
  • It meets BS 5534 and is largely maintenance-free for decades.

The problem with mortar in our climate

Traditional ridge tiles are bedded in mortar. In the North East, freeze-thaw cycles crack that mortar and strong coastal winds work the tiles loose — which is why ridge repairs are one of the most common call-outs locally.

How dry ridge works

A dry ridge system screw-fixes each ridge tile to a batten with a weatherproof unioned roll underneath. Nothing relies on mortar, so nothing cracks or washes out, and the ridge line is ventilated too.

Our take for Sunderland

Given our exposure, we usually recommend dry ridge (and dry verge) as the better long-term value.

Is dry ridge worth the extra cost?+
In an exposed, wet climate like the North East, yes — it removes the most common cause of ridge leaks and repointing call-outs and lasts for decades.
Can dry ridge be fitted to my existing roof?+
Usually yes — we can strip the old mortar ridges and fit a dry ridge system without a full re-roof.
